Beauty Routine

I don’t wear makeup.  Occasionally I’m smug about that fact, particularly when I walk past the makeup aisle and see the prices, but mostly it has no bearing on my life whatsoever.  To each their own, right?

Sometimes I wish I did wear face paint, because people who do can do some really incredible things, but I hate not being able to touch my face.  And how does lipstick not drive people bonkers?  I have a sneaking suspicion that I am just not grown up enough to handle makeup, despite my high school flirtation with blue eye shadow.

Despite my bare face, I don’t entirely leave my appearance unattended.  I do dye my hair.

I have not yet mastered the selfie either.

Until we moved to Hawaii, this was a VERY expensive beauty habit- about 160$ to 180$ every month.  And for the year before we moved, I had to drive an hour and a half away to get it done because I had a bad experience at the salon in town.  But it was important to me, so I did it.

As you might have guessed, in my little coastal town there is a certain limit to things like ‘luxury hair styling.’  Luckily, Kevin stepped up and offered to do it.  And it turns out he’s a natural.  Now all I have to do is buy the various supplies off Amazon and mix them up- he does the rest.  It might not come with the soothing head massaging or ‘blow out’ that the salon did, but it sure is cheaper!  And instead of tipping him, all I have to do is cut his hair in return.

I love my pink hair.  Beginning the day after Kevin does it, I feel like I’m enveloped in a bubblegum pink shield, and it’s that much harder for bad, frustrating, or otherwise unpleasant things to get to me.  In addition, even the little positive things get magnified.  Basically, I become Pinkie Pie.

The funny thing is that, when I go longer between dye jobs, I forget how magical the world is with pink hair.  But the second I’m pinked up, the world get brighter.

Do any of you have beauty routines that make your life better?  Fancy mascara that makes you feel badass?  Extra-long fake nails that bring all the boys to the yard?

P.S.  I’m out of town buying a house this week, so no manuscript update.
